3D Printer Thermistor

A thermistor is the most common device for measuring temperatures and they a very commonly used these days on 3D printers. Controlling the temperature of a printer’s nozzle and heated bed is critical to successful prints. These delicate thermocouples and resistance temperature detectors known as (RTDs) have come to dominate the 3D printing market because they’re simple, low-cost, and easy to integrate with controller boards.

NOTE: Thermistor wiring is delicate. Do not overtighten screws over the thermistor wires when installing.

Test Your Thermistor

To check if thermistors are within their range of specified resistance, the following measurements can be done. For this measurement, the multimeter needs to be set to the lowest range which includes 150 kΩ. Commonly, this is 200K on multimeters.

All thermistors are rated to be 100 kΩ at 25 °C. To be realistic, with a varying temperature between 20°C and 30°C, you can expect [80 kΩ – 125 kΩ].


A Faulty Thermistor 

Some of the symptoms you might be experiencing are: not reading its target temperature, inconsistent lines throughout your prints and ultimately error codes displaying on your printer during heating.

As always, take care not to overtighten connecting cables or, if used, any grub screws that hold the thermistor in place.
